Magic-wielding Churchwitch and secret addict Chess Putnam knows better than anyone just how high a price people are willing to pay for a chemical rush. But when someone with money to burn and a penchant for black magic starts tampering with Downside’s drug supply, Chess realizes that the unlucky customers are paying with their souls—and taking the innocent with them, as the magic-infused speed compels them to kill in the most gruesome ways possible.

As if the streets weren’t scary enough, the looming war between the two men in her life explodes, taking even more casualties and putting Chess squarely in the middle. Downside could become a literal ghost town if Chess doesn’t find a way to stop both the war and the dark wave of death-magic, and the only way to do that is to use both her addiction and her power to enter the spell and chase the magic all the way back to its malevolent source. Too bad that doing so will probably kill Chess—if the war doesn’t first destroy the man who’s become her reason for living.

My Review

I have loved this series since I read the first one a couple of years ago. I devoured the books and fell in love with Chess and Terrible and I was champing at the bit to read this one. So imagine my surprise to find I nearly didn't finish this one and not because I was procrastinating but because I was bored.
The story just seemed to coast about half way through and I one point I was so disappointed in the turn the story took I was ready to throw in the towel because I really didn't like what I was reading I just didn't buy Chess being that stupid or weak. The saving grace for the book was the last quarter of the book. That managed to sweep me up and carry me through but it has left me wondering if this series can go on much longer and that makes me sad.

  2. I would say still read it the first 4 books are so good I have read them all more then once, which is why I was so shocked at this one not measuring up to them.

  3. Have not read these yet. But will still check into them. Every book is not for Every One... Thanks for sharing.

  4. Such a bummer! I read a book a few months ago that left me with the same feeling.

  5. This sounds great! I may have to get into this series after I finish what I am reading right now!. Thanks!!!

  6. I hate it when I read half a book and then it bombs out on me. At least the last bit of this book was better than the middle..
