Genre Special: Steampunk part 2.

Review writen by: Tim

As promised, I’m back with additional reviews in the Steampunk genre.

As a gentle reminder, Steampunk isn't for just everyone. So how can one decide? Do you like period romance/mystery? Do you like smart characters who think ahead of their time? Is "whodunit" in your regular reading vocabulary? Can you imagine the steamy thoughts that must have been going on in the minds of all those rigidly proper society folks back in the 1800s? Yes? Okay then, Steampunk might just be your cup of tea. Give it a try with one of the currently hot authors in the genre, like Calista Taylor or Kady Cross.

The Girl in the Steel Corset
By: Kady Cross
In 1897 England, 16-year-old Finley Jayne is convinced she's a freak. No normal Victorian girl has a darker side that makes her capable of knocking out a full-grown man with one punch. Only Griffin King sees the magical darkness inside her that says she's special . . . that she's one of "them."

My Review

I have already admitted that I am a Kady Cross fan and with this title that has become a certain fact. Steampunk at its best has a combination of things that are almost possible to believe and characters who are super progressive for their time. Ms Cross blends these ingredients with ease and in the process, creates a story filled with suspense, friendship and smart thinking. For those lady readers, well any readers, who really enjoy a female lead with strength of character and loyalty, honesty and all around solid qualities, you will completely enjoy Finley Jayne. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

For One Last Kiss
by Calista Taylor
As a reaper, Lilly knows that relations with the living are strictly forbidden, and even more damning is to contact someone from her past. Yet when she gets the opportunity to see her betrothed once more, she cannot possibly resist the chance for one last kiss.

My Review

Thanks in a large part to the writing skills of Calista Taylor I have become a fan of Steampunk. I like the era, the attention to detail Ms Taylor includes really helps in taking the reader there. This is escape literature for any time. The lead character in this and the next title is a late young lady of London, taken far too early to let go of things in the living world. I look forward to another title by this very capable storyteller.

Jack: A Steampunk Romance Thriller
 by Calista Taylor
Lilly Gordon delivers death to unsuspecting souls, Fate’s decisions carried out with a simple touch. But when a woman is found brutally slain before her destined time to die, Jack, Lilly’s ex-lover and a fellow reaper, is fingered for the crime, the evidence undeniable.

As the only one who’s been close to Jack, Lilly finds herself dragged into the investigation by Lord Mason Archer, chancellor to the reapers. But Lilly and Mason have a past of their own, and the long hours spent in Mason’s company leave Lilly falling for the difficult man who not only infuriates her, but makes her heart race. With the latest victim mutilated beyond recognition, it seems the killings cannot get any more heinous—but there’s more than one force at work, and Lilly soon realizes there are things far worse than death and dismemberment when dealing with Jack the Ripper.

My Review

Now, think for just a minute. If someone said Victorian London and combined that with the name Jack, what would be the very first thing to jump into your mind? Well, hold that thought. As amazing as this may seem, Calista Taylor has used an old tale, one that any reader with an interest in crime or suspense or mystery has surely already read and probably more than once. Somehow she has managed to create something different and even though the reader still anticipates the outcome, there is suspense, intrigue, romance and ... at the end, an unexpected twist. In two words, great reading!
